With hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and fires wreaking havoc throughout the world and with terrorist attacks a possibility, it becomes urgent that all citizens be prepared for emergencies.
A Vegetarians in Paradise reader in New York City wrote to us following the hurricanes asking us for suggestions on what to include in a vegetarian survival kit. We decided to throw this valuable disaster preparation problem open to our readers for their suggestions and plans. The responses were quite gratifying to us, and in reading the suggestions, we exclaimed, "These are some damn good ideas."
That feeling was echoed when popular blog BoingBoing, commented, "Vegetarians in Paradise has a [Vegetarian Survival Kit] page outlining what a vegetarian might need in his or her survival kit to prepare for hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, terrorist attacks, or the coming apocalypse. Some of the suggestions are from a book that sounds like a lot of survivalist fun, titled Apocalypse Chow: How to Eat When the Power Goes Out. The majority of tips come from the site's readers."
What ensued was a blizzard of hits on our website and many "snarky," anti-vegetarian comments on BoingBoing. We followed up with our own News from the Nest story that featured some of the juicy comments.
If you haven't made your own disaster preparations, you may want to take a look at our Vegetarian Survival Kit.
