This is tricky. As the homeschooling parent of a high-functioning autistic child, I believe it's vital for parents to have accurate information about their child's issues in order to be able to discipline effectively. Sadly, kids on the autism spectrum very often get punished for behaviors they can't control, because the parents don't understand what is happening. For the sake of the child, I think it's imperative for the parents to learn about Asperger's and high functioning autism so they can help their little girl. On the other hand, you mentioned they don't have insurance. I learned the hard way that once you have a diagnosis "in writing" for a family member, it can become extraordinarily difficult to get health insurance in some situations. My husband is self employed and so we are absolutely unable (so far) to get health insurance for my 2 kids with special needs that count as "pre-existing conditions." This isn't usually a problem if a parent's employer provides group health insurance, but it makes it really hard for individuals and self-employed. So if that's an issue, the parents might want to avoid the "official" diagnosis and see what information they can get more discreetly. From what you described this little girl has several classic symptoms of autism spectrum and it won't just go away on its own, certainly not through consequences alone. Maybe the family doctor, or someone else in your church, could give the family some direction without having to get a diagnosis on the record. Good luck, and God bless you for your caring heart and ministry to these families. Anjoo
