Some people still like to have various items, even if they are older editions because they can be used to supplement or as reference. For example, an older edition history book could be used by someone that wants extra resources to go along with other materials. What they are using may not have something in it that they want out of the textbook.
You never know. Someone may want it anyway,especailly if they dont' want to use it with tests,workbooks etc.
