Our church threw us a shower - adoption party. They had us register at Target for towels, etc. Our girls were 7 and 9 when we adopted them. They were added to 3 children that we had already.
If you don't have someone to throw you a shower, I think it would be perfectly acceptable and fun to have a celebration at your home. Here is an idea: have your pastor dedicate them (like you would have a baby dedicated) - but have it done at the party.
