Abigail, I'm a nurse who used to do nutritional counseling, certified Lactation consultant, etc. and have been this route to discover what I call 'borderline' hyperinsulinism. During pregnancy I was almost placed on insulin but went into premature labor instead, resulting in the birth of a large baby...I've followed all the exercise and diet advice for years, done the protein diet with mild success; finally added weight training and bicycling hills besides elliptical and running only to be discouraged for the same reasons you stated only more pronounced. Since blood sugars are perfect, there's nothing any MD will/ can do for me. Also had the diagnosis Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, though no actual cysts were viewed on my ovaries, infertility has been part of my history. Weight training has helped up my metabolism though the thyroid values have remained normal each time. Just press on, keep on, don't give in, but avoid over-doing as it can become an obsession and I nearly ruined my knees bicycling hills. Take good care, D in Az
