Our VegSource database of restaruants for Washington D.C. and vicinity
comes from a list compiled by the Vegetarian Society of the District of Columbia and other sources.
Food for Thought - Vegetarian (1738 Connecticut Ave. NW - Dupont Circle;
797-1095)
Comments:
Faith says "My favorite place!!! Most dishes you can arrange to be
low fat. They have a menu
for the m**t eaters, but the extensive menu for the vegetarians is great.
It's like the All American
Vege Restaurant. They have fake Italian lunchm**t subs, fake steak &
cheese subs (not vegan),
great salad combos, chili, the menu is four pages long I think, the items
are well marked vegetarian
or vegan. My favorite thing there (not low fat but worth it) Vegan
Nachos. The nacho cheese sauce
is made with Tahini, celery seed and still trying to figure out the rest.
It's topped with tomatoes,
onions, black olive slices. So save some calories before you go there and
try them."
Delights of the Garden (2616 Georgia Ave. NW; Shaw/Howard University;
518-3833)
"This has got to be my favorite place in my favorite city. Delights of the
Garden is one of the only
places I know where you can eat EVERYTHING on the menu. I feel like a kid
in a candy store at
this place.. to top it all off, Delights has a great afro-centric
atmosphere (located accross from
Howard University it should!) and all the food is RAW! That is right, a
vegan raw restaurant... but
don't think this just means salad. Try the chili and make sure to get a
smoothie! They also have a
wonderful food preparation book out on the market so I suggest everyone
goes and buys it.
Soul Vegetarian Cafe(2606 Georgia Ave. NW; Howard University; 328-7685)
Vegetable Garden (11618 Rockville Pike; Rockville; 468-9301)
"Here is a description of a place outside DC my friend Brian sent me...
Suggestion: next time you are home (in DC area), head out to White Flint
and eat at the Vegetable
Garden. It's a bit pricey, but it is an all vegan Chinese place, and it is
absolutely unbelieveable.
Trust me, you will be glad you tried it".

This list was taken from an article in the Washington Post:
The Green Scene: Best in Vegetarian
Dining
By Walter Nicholls
Wednesday, April 29, 1998; Page E07
Just about any restaurant can put together a
suitableplate for vegetarians. But strict vegetarians, and even
stricter vegans, often fear hidden non-veggie ingredients --
from chicken stock in the vegetable soup to gelatin made from
animal parts in the salad dressing.
They also worry about mixed-contact cooking
methods, in which dishes with meat or dairy products may be
prepared on the same surfaces as vegetarian ones.
So we asked the Vegetarian Society of D.C.
for its list of recommended vegetarian places. Then we checked
them out. Here's what we found, divided into Vegetarian
(restaurants that serve no meat, fish or poultry but do use
dairy products) and Vegan (no animal by-products at all).
VEGETARIAN
AMMA: Here's a bright, modern, fast-food spot
that's an offshoot of the popular Aditi restaurant in Georgetown
and features food of South India.
"This place is really authentic and fresh," a
diner and native of Madras volunteered. We enjoyed a Masala Dosa
($3.99), an 18-inch-long crispy rice cre^pe filled with spicy
potatoes and onions, served with a lentil sauce and coconut
chutney. 344-A Maple Ave. E., Vienna; call 703-938-5328.
BALAJEE: The best deal at this Indian stand in
the Eatery food court, above the Rosslyn Metro station, is the
all-you-can-eat buffet ($4.99). The six courses include curries,
breads and dessert. The wonderful crunchy items in the grilled
potatoes are tiny fried lentils. Open weekdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Rosslyn Eatery, 1700 N. Moore St., Arlington;call 703-516-0700.
BERWYN CAFE: In the rear of Beautiful Day
Trading Company, a health-food market, there's a little cafe
that serves simple, healthful food. Multigrain shepherd's pie
($5.70) was fine, though on the bland side. But there's a nice
selection of condiments on the counter that make the plain grains
and good vegetables sing. 5010 Berwyn Rd., College Park; call
301-345-6655.
HEALTH IS WEALTH: Choose from an extensive menu
or try the dinner buffet ($8.95-$10.95) at this large restaurant.
5731 Lee Hwy., Arlington; call 703-237-0352.
INDIAN DELIGHT: There's lots of variety offered
at these two food-court Indian stands. We enjoyed the Combo Delight
($6.50), a choice of two curries, rice, puri (deep-fried bread) and
raita (yogurt mixture). Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Ave. NE; call
202-842-1040.
Post Office Pavilion, 1100 Pennsylvania Ave. NW;
call 202-371-2295.
MADHU BAN: The cuisine of both North and South
India is served in this cozy restaurant in Clarendon's Little
Saigon area. And the food was pretty terrific. Regular customers
hit the lunch ($4.75) and dinner ($5.95) buffets with their 3 or
4 entrees, soup and bread. 3217 N. Washington Blvd., Arlington;
call 703-528-7184.
PLANET X COFFEE HOUSE & CAFE: Ready for a
brain boost? Planet, a hip cafe with cosmic decor, has lots of
energizer slush, smoothies and frappes laced with natural
stimulants. What's to eat? The grilled soy burger ($4.95) is
the favorite here. 7422 Baltimore Ave., College Park;call 301-277-5487.
SWAGAT: This large, attractive place has a
wonderful collection of color photographs of Indian kitchens
along the walls. Our favorite offering on the lunch buffet
($6.95; dinner, $10.95, is served weekends only) was a tasty
yogurt soup flavored with curry leaf. 2063 E. University
Blvd., Adelphi; call 301-434-2247.
UDUPI PALACE: Here we found the best Indian
vegetarian cooking in a bright, inviting space as well. Each
dish we tried had its own unique character and set of good
flavors and textures. You can't go wrong with the lunch and
dinner specials ($8.95 to $16.95), which give a variety of
dishes from South India. 1329 University Blvd., Langley
Park; call 301-434-1531.
VEGAN
SUNFLOWER: Our visit to this Vienna vegan, an
outpost of a Taiwan-based chain with branches in Tokyo and New York,
was an exciting veg-out. The sunny room was crowded and cheerful
with sunflowers everywhere. The menu is a mix of Chinese- and
Japanese-inspired dishes -- from pan-fried dumplings to udon noodles.
Like ginger? Try Napa Cabbage Delight ($8.25). 2531 Chain Bridge Rd.,
Vienna; call 703-319-3888.
DELIGHTS OF THE GARDEN: Across the street from
the Howard University School of Business there's a cool-looking cafe
that features both raw and cooked vegan favorites. First-time visitors
often choose the Sampler ($5.39 at lunch, $5.95 dinner) with hefty
portions of grains, nuts, mixed vegetables, hummus and seaweed. 2616
Georgia Ave. NW; call 202-319-8747.
SOUL VEGETARIAN CAFE & EXODUS CARRYOUT: A small
self-serve restaurant with a menu that bows to "burgers" made with
tofu, vegetable protein or legumes. We liked the BBQ Tofu Sub ($4.50),
a hefty slab of grilled tofu spread with a light barbecue sauce, and
lettuce, on toasted full-grain bread. 2606 Georgia Ave. NW; call
202-328-7685.
VEGETABLE GARDEN: This veggie landmark on the Pike
has a large, comprehensive menu that includes organic, macrobiotic and
Heart Healthy Choice dishes selected by Suburban Hospital. The menu
lists all ingredients and gives a picture of the finished dish as well.
The most popular entree is Carved & Curled Shiitake Mushrooms With
Asparagus ($12.95). 11618 Rockville Pike, Rockville; call 301-468-9301.
YUAN FU: One-month-old Fu is a lot of fun. Why?
Chef Li Ming Tai's Chinese cooking is so beautifully presented on
platters with elaborate carved vegetable garnishes. Mock meats are a
specialty here. The best dishes we tried were Sesame Chicken ($9.95)
made of tofu and Bean Curd With Basil and Ginger ($9.95), which is
served in a nifty metal pot. 798 Rockville Pike, Rockville; call
301-762-5937.

One of our VegSource friends sent the following recommendation:
"Zed's, in Georgetown. It's Ethiopian, and supposed to be the best one in
the area. I can say that it was quite an enjoyable experience, though if
you're someone like me who generally avoids caffeine, don't drink the
coffee unless you have a long book you wish to spend the remainder of the
sleepless night reading."
