Introduction

Some Star?! Took me to my 67th year, Jan. '03, to switch to the "correct diet for humans!"

What took me so long?

People change their diet and exercise for mainly three reasons:

# 1 is Pride or Self-esteem -- wanting to look good.

That had entered into my thinking as, in these later years, I gained about a pound a year, buying pants with bigger waist sizes, reaching a peak weight of 148 lb. about 5 years ago (height 5' 7 1/2 "). My solution at that time was to do more exercise and to use Cambridge Diet Products again. Became a Cambridge Consultant again -- was one in '81 when the Cambridge Plan and Products swept the country! I liked, and believed in, this side business, especially due to having a great "Up-Line" person who made a great website for growing the business. My target weight, maybe too thin, was 129 lb. -- my trim, fit condition when I resigned from the Air Force in 1961. I did get down to 140 lb.

# 2 is trying to deal with health problems.

Luckily, I have been quite healthy all my life. One concern was a somewhat high total cholesterol value averaging about 220 from '68 to '93, and trending upward to the 240 area after early retirement in '95. Want below 200, per medical standards normal. Want below 150 per Dr. McD and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (www.heartattackproof.com). In '02, I had two special tests done that showed no circulatory problems. One was a full body CT Scan for $1,000 out of my pocket -- no calcium deposits (hardening) in the arteries!! These tests made me relax on the cholesterol risk factors. My blood pressure has always been very good -- I get 121/69, with a pulse of 60, as I sit here and type this story.

(Status of total cholesterol for me -- In June 05 , I tested at 215. My local Dr. had me take a 20 mg tablet a day of Lovastatin (generic for Mevacor) for three months. Retest gave 195. Not much of a reduction, considering that I got my lowest reading ever of 179, in June '03, when I took most of the non-prescription items, not including Niacin, that Dr. McD identified as helping to lower cholesterol. I checked with Dr. McD and he said that he would find it difficult to prescribe continuing statins for a healthy guy like me. I quit the drug, to the consternation of my local Dr., a Vegetarian because of religion, from India, who has forced his mother and dad to take statins, along with him. He wrote down that I refused to continue statins. He questioned the value of ever authorizing a cholesterol test again for me.)

# 3 is getting educated!

Three events stand out for me:

-- At age 42, in '78, I went to my 25th Anniversary of my High School Graduation, back in Oil City PA. I was attracted by a classmate lady that I saw as "The pick of the litter" (excuse the characterization!). She was very trim, swam in the river at the picnic, and had a great mental attitude. Because of her, I did the "est Training" and several other Human Potential events, till '81, that were very mind-expanding (kids should learn this in school!). She was a "VEGETARIAN!" I did not give that much attention, though.

-- In '91, I was exposed to John Robbins' (www.earthsave.org) '87 book and '91 video -- "Diet For a New America." I just replayed the video! There, with the solid nutrition messages that they continue to deliver today, are Dr. Michael Klaper ('87, "Vegan Nutrition -- A Diet For All Reasons," www.drklaper.com), young Dr. John McDougall (many books and videos and live-in programs), and Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., ('05, "The China Study," www.thechinastudy.com). I was strongly impressed in '91, and still did not pursue switching to a complete plant-based diet.

-- In '02, while gathering good health and nutrition info for me and for my Cambridge Products customers, I reviewed my books and video from '91, and discovered Dr. McD's great website, email newsletter, on-line archives, many books, and 6-VHS tapes package -- "Total Health Solution!" FINALLY -- here was the convincing and motivating health and nutrition education that this thickheaded, technically oriented, retired Aerospace Engineer needed!!!

Participation in the McDougall "Total Health Solution" Program!

I enrolled us as a family of four in the Jan. '03 10-day THS session. I felt that this would be a very exciting and educational and motivational peak vacation for us! It was all that, and more! We made many new friends with the classmates. Dr. McDougall is our personal physician for consultation if we have serious health problems to deal with. I was permitted to videotape some of the happenings during the session and made a DVD Video to give to participants and presenters. Our girls, Irene (13 then) and Billierose (11 then), played the keyboard piano that we took there and they demo'ed ballet dance moves, in costumes, during our class graduation ceremony. I consider that the girls have a Ph.D. in correct nutrition and health. This was the best course of their home-schooling! Kids should learn this in Kindergarten! (See photo of 4 Ks with Dr. McD and with Mary McD's parents, both age 90 in '03)

McD Adventure Tour Costa Rica '04!

We just could not resist partaking of a McD-led Adventure Tour. We did not do the '03 tour to Costa Rica mainly because of low spare funds and it was too soon after the 10-day program. Luckily Costa Rica was the location again for the tour in July '04 and we had a fantastic time! All the meals, even away from the Ocotal Resort (www.ocotalresort.com), were Vegan and delicious. The tours were excellent and adventurous and the McD evening health lectures were powerful. I was permitted to videotape the lectures and I provided Dr. McD with DVDs that I produced of the lectures and of the tours.

Before the trip, we decided that we wanted a second week of vacationing in Costa Rica. Activities were not pre-planned. This worked out beautifully -- we hooked up with one of the McD experienced guides, Rafael Campos (email: camposweston@racsa.co.cr), the only guide who was a McD Vegan for five years. He made getting good food, a la McD, easy! Touring included the capitol San Jose, three volcano areas, and a coffee plantation/resort. We went to one area that even Rafael had not been to before -- hairy driving in his 10-passenger van up and down treacherous, muddy one-lane roads. Whew! I have video on that.

What makes us "Star McDougallers?"

Sorry -- we have no diseases that we have miraculously recovered from! However, we are good examples of healthy people benefiting greatly from changing to correct nutrition. We have shown that it can and should be done and that it is not a burden at all. (See 4 Ks recent photo, Thanksgiving Day, 24 Nov '05 -- Yes, that is a "Showpiece Real Turkey" nearby, for our many guests that day.)

Where we have "mainly Starred" is in passing the education on to others.
