You might get better results with this question on the New Veggies board. Also, Dr. McDougall has a program for weight loss that is a lifestyle rather than a diet and is intended to not only make you weigh less but be healthier (think less or no prescription drugs and medical care and cheaper insurance when you're older, think of it as an investment).

I have found in my almost 50 years on this planet that everything is backwards. Meat and dairy products should be expensive, because of their true cost to the environment, our health, and our relationship to nature. But in fact they are heavily subsidized so that a McD burger is cheap and organic fruit is expensive. So here are some ideas:

Eating low on the food chain can be inexpensive if you stick to foods in their natural form. Beans and grains from the bulk bins are inexpensive, much less than the canned variety. Vegetables can be unfortunately expensive, but I am always looking for specials and plan meals around those specials. I love organic produce but can't always afford it, I also like the idea of supporting organic agriculture because it's so much more sustainable, but when you can't, buy any kind of produce. Check out farmer's markets in your area, they're great for less expensive produce.

And remember that you have to eat something, eating more healthily will end up costing you the same to slightly more than a diet including lots of junky food, and the long-term costs aren't even comparable.

I do think having lots of good cookbooks is a must, a slow-cooker is a good investment (I buy mine at thrift stores) and you can make lots of healthy bean soups, chilis, chowders, vegetable-based meals in a slow cooker.

Those are just some thoughts, but do go post this on New Veggies because I'm sure Bryanna can give you many more ideas than I can.
