I became a lacto-ovo vegetarian 25 years ago with the hopes of maintaing a healthier weight. My weight kept creeping up over the years. For me dairy really was the problem. Instead of getting tacos I just got cheese tacos, Instead of fajitas I got Chilli Rellenos, instead of spaghetti and meat balls I got Fettucini Al Fredo. I've come to the conclusion that dairy is worse than meat. Healthwise I think I would have been better off 25 years ago if I kept eating meat and cut out dairy than what I did. I probably ate more fat as a lacto-ovo vegetarian than I did as an omnivore. Cut out dairy and eat steamed and raw vegetables, fruits (not too much fruit though), and whole grains and i think you will start making progress toward your goals. The McDougall books are a good read if you want some guidence.
