I credit a McDougallish vegan diet for my success in permanent weight reduction (6'4", 220 -> 180, maintained for four years so far). During the weight loss phase I used BalanceLog so I could run an average daily calorie deficit of 230. The company that publishes BalanceLog, HealtheTech, also manufactures a basal metabolic rate measuring device that records how much oxygen your particular body burns. People of the same sex, age, weight, and height can differ in BMR by 400 calories or more: some people simply do more fidgeting. Healthetech cites research showing that subjects who kept a food diary and recorded at least 75% of their calories, lost more weight than subjects who did not, without there being any particular pattern to what the subjects ate. Even if a subject's diet includes Krispy Kremes, the diarist chooses to eat fewer of them, because the act of writing "one Krispy Kreme original glazed, 200 calories" in the diary engages the cerebral cortex.
