You should also try to substitute as often as you can. Since you will still be eating dairy products, try using whipped butter instead of the stick butter. Whipped butter contains significantly less saturated fat, and is much healthier than margarine. If you attempt to completely cut sweets out of your diet, chances are good that you won't be able to stick with it. Cold and hot cereals can help a lot. Cheerios are a great option -- they are preservative free, very low in fat, and a good source of vitamins and whole grains (especially the Multi-Grain Cheerios, which are high in nutrients, and low in sugar, but taste very good). I eat them almost every day for breakfast, and often as a snack. Eat light ice-creams or puddings instead of cakes. Edy's and Breyers make excellent slow-churned ice-cream, which contains half the fat of regular ice-cream, but tastes delicious. For a salty snack, try pretzels or baked potato chips (such as the ones by Lays brand), which are far healthier than regular chips. Also, if you haven't yet, try veggie burgers. I love the ones by Morningstar Farms. They sell veggie burger crumbles, too, which can be used to make "meat" sauce or tacos. The meatless bacon is also very good, and far healthier than regular bacon. There is very little difference in the flavor (really). Many bacon bits are not actually made of real bacon, but of the same ingredients used in the veggie bacon strips. You don't have to completely sacrifice convenience in order to be a vegetarian, either. Even fast food restaraunts are starting to offer healthier, vegetarian-friendly foods. McDonalds sells side salads with all natural dressings (including light Italian); and most Burger Kings offer veggie burgers now, as well. Happy New Year, and good luck with your new diet!
