Congratulations, SloppyJo, on considering a Vegetarian diet!
I, too, had tried becoming Vegetarian about 12 years ago, and failed after only a week. What helped me was, about two years ago, I was engaged to a Pescatarian (only consumes fish as meat. The rest is Vegetarian meals). Having her at my side, I was able to convert as well and suceeded, due to her tips. After a year, I became a lacto-ovo, giving up fish, but still consuming eggs and dairy.
My tip to you is finding a veggie buddy, and visit this site often! Since me and my fiance have split, I visit this site a lot for moral support, plus I happened to have two local veggie friends that I speak to a lot. Also, I bought "Diet for a New America" by John Robbins, and "Living among meat eaters" by Carol J. Adams. Those two books have helped me feel great about my choice! I've also purchased two Vegetarian cook books.
Last but not least, I've developed a secret love affair with Whole Foods market! I treat myself to their extremely broad selection of Vegetarian products at least once a month. Seeing I can still have corn dogs, chik'n nuggets, bacon, sausage, tacos, burgers, you name it! - has helped me stay Vegetarian for two and a half years, and never look back!
You can do it SloppyJo, and you'll be happy you did! Oh, and as for the junk food? Dont believe the hype! There is such thing as an overweight Vegetarian! I was one! I just lost 51 pounds, and I gained the weight from eating too much junk food! So be extra cautious, and keep junk food to a minimum!
Happy New Eating, and New Year!
