Subject: Long Vegan Friendship Has Ended
Date: December 23, 2011 at 10:25 am PST

I just had a very strange and disappointing experience. A friend of mine had been vegetarian for 15 years and vegan for about 3 years—and a dues paying member of PETA. Right before Thanksgiving, she announces that she was feeling weak and “like crap” for quite a long time and started eating meat again. She now says she feels much better. She claimed that plant protein simply was not cutting it for her and now has joined an ex-vegetarian group. She tells me that soy is really dangerous and that it’s not animal products that are the problem—it’s how it’s prepared. We ended up in a back and forth via email….and she decided she didn’t want to be my friend anymore. I was left thinking that she has completely lost her mind. Her change was so abrupt and extreme. No rational argument got through to her. I asked her if she got checked by a doctor. She told me she had blood drawn, but had already decided to eat meat again before knowing what the results were. She also told me that 75% of vegetarians will eventually go back to eating meat. This has completely blown me away! Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Is this statistic really true?
