Hi Sardi

I understand your dilemma regarding feeding your pet a vegetarian diet. I would like to discuss whether it is ethically responsible for vegans and vegetarians to own pets that are carnivores.

This is a delicate issue for many and most avoid discussing it, but I feel that your post presents this opportunity. As humans we have the intelligence to to make certain choices about our lives, how we live, what food to eat, who to associate with etc. Animals however do not have the same intelligence as us and therefore their choices are controlled by their base instincts. It is a fact that dogs and cats are carnivores and eat meat.

For vegetarians that have chosen this way of life due to having compassion for animal suffering, moral or environmental reasons, I cannot understand the justification as to why they then own pets that are carnivores and require meat that comes from slaughtered animals of factory farms, animals that have suffered unimaginable cruelty at the hands of their captors and that contribute to the degradation of the environment.

Why not get a vegetarian friendly pet like a rabbit, guinea pig or hamster instead of trying to force carnivorous pets to eat vegetarian food?
