This post, for some reason, is included in Stumble Upon's engine. Imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon it! Thakns to those of you who gave me suggestions back then. I did indeed end up living in my car for a couple months, followed by some months of other hellish existence, but I made it out alive. :-)
