I agree. The welfarist vs. abolitionist debate has been going on since the beginning of time, at least vegetarian awareness time, and I vascillate all the time because human psychology is the key. What will it take for people to become objectively compassionate? I sometimes think nothing, I have so little faith in the human state of affairs, sometimes I am so down. And as my daughter in Oregon just said to me on the phone, sometimes you have to stop letting the sadness and seeming futility get you down and suck you in. Sometimes I just have to escape, play piano, or sing, or do needlework, or work in the garden, something simple, and pretend like none if it exists. It's the price we pay for having a sensitive heart.
