That is what would be called a martyr. The very sad thing about martyrs is that usually their deaths do not result in any significant change other than their own loss of life. I feel said for the person who attended the lecture with you and made that decision. I do not see the point in sacrificing one's life when it certainly will not make any difference to the cause she is trying to support. That's my point. We can live and be flexible when no alternatives exist, or we can die or suffer and waste our own lives when we could have actually helped bring about change over the long haul. There have been many martyrs for many causes throughout history. Do we remember most (or any) of them? No. Did the sacrifice of their own lives bring about positive change? No. Live and reduce your own suffering. Only then can you help reduce the suffering of others and help evolve the world. If you do not value your own life, it will be nearly impossible to value the lives of others. Compassion always begins with ourselves. ~Jo
