Hi Leslie,

Yes, if we don't want to take the medication because of the ethics of animal testing, we have to be prepared to be sick, unless we can find an alternative therapy. This is a hard position to be in. After the Jeffrey Masson talk regarding vivisection, I was chatting to someone who had also attended the lecture & she was the first person I've ever met who said they would not want to be treated with any drugs whatsoever, even if they were in hospital severely ill, hanging onto life by a thread. She has made sure her partner knows this and has made him promise that if she is unconscious, he will not allow drugs to be given to her. That sort of dedication to the cause of animals is admirable to me and it is that discussion with her that has got me thinking lately about this whole issue. (Previously I'd always pushed it to the back of my mind because I've been on medication for years and didn't want to face the fact that I may be a hypocrite). To her it was a black and white issue. Her attitude was that if you're vegan for animal rights reasons then to use drugs doesn't make sense. She was quite upset when Jeffrey Masson said he would probably take prescription drugs if it would save his life. To hear the opinions of two knowledgeable people who I respect with such differing views on a topic close to my heart has had an impact on me and ever since then I've been medication free (but still confused about it).

Another thing about medication that bothers me is the vast quantities of animals that were used in tests for the one drug. Therefore, if I take one type of drug, it's not "just" one rat that was put through experiments and then killed, but hundreds (or maybe thousands?)
