Hello, Rabbit. I'm not sure what in my column didn't ring true for you. Perhaps you are looking for a particular answer that I didn't give you.

My belief is that we should not impose undue suffering on ourselves in the process of alleviating the suffering of others. If we are ill or incapacitated, it prevents us from living a full life and helping to end the exploitation of animals, people, and the earth. What good can we offer when we are suffering from illness? When we are able to function to our fullest capacity, we are able to offer our best to everyone, including animals. It is not a matter of putting one life's value over another -- it is a matter of taking a realistic look at our current world and working to our best within the limitations of that world. A person's death or suffering due to refusing to take necessary medication is not going to save one animal. It's a philosophical argument that is illogical, and to me, irrational. Changing a culture's perspective and working to eliminate animal testing is what will move the world in a different direction. A loss of an activist's life, or that person being miserable or unable to function, would be a horrible waste -- not only of a valuable existence but of the life of someone who could truly facilitate change.
