Garmont used to make a boot called the Vegan. I don't know if they still make it, but they did until fairly recently. I have worn them for all kinds of hiking including backpacks, scrambles, and trail hikes of 35 km or more. They give me great support. I am pretty sure they have a steel shank - if not, then whatever it has instead is pretty stiff. I liked them so much that I got a spare pair so that I would be assured of having a replacement pair whenever they eventually wear out. Keith
