Two things that help me manage sugar cravings (when I DO manage, which is not all of the time)-

1)having sufficient protein from legumes - which is different than the proteins from starchy foods or vegetables. The Seventh-Day Adventists tipped me off to this, and they have years of vegetarian living experience.(I am not one of them but enjoy their cookbooks sometimes). For me, and for some others: Insufficient proteins = sweet cravings

2) Keep a stock of foods that are very high in natural, whole sugars and eat them when the cravings hit. My favorites: dry dates, figs and raisins. I find they fill the cravings without creating a rebound craving. I even occasionally make cookies that are sweetened exclusively with these fruits and fruit juice concentrate, and I find out that unlike processed sugars, I am able to enjoy them in moderation without the out-of-control cravings.
