Research on protein needs in the 1950's by Dr. Rose found that we need only about 10 g of protein per day. World Health Organization doubled that; their recommendation is 20 g, or about 5% of your daily calorie intake if you eating about a 1800 calorie per day diet. We as humans do not "lose" protien other than the minor sloughing off of cells from skin, etc. As far as B12, it is also found in nutritional yeast, which I use to make "uncheese" as well as adding to salad dressings, or on soups. It is, however, a good idea to supplement with B12; a minimum of 5 mcg is recommended. You do not need to eat a diet that includes animal foods.
