I guess it's just the general lack of knowledge in this area. Petco isn't the only animal store that has steered me wrong. These stores also stock toxic ingredients -- such as cedar shavings, and "fluff," which has caused injury to many small animals. I think it's all about money, they want to keep selling these products even though they are actually harmful to animals.

And I honestly don't think it's that much to ask to have an employee who is in charge of small animals know basic things about them, it seems like there is so little help these days in just about any store, people can just get a job, not do any reading or learning whatsoever, and be in a position where they are having others ask them for advice, which is what you should be able to get at stores. This particular employee has been there for a very long time, probably several years. It would take him maybe an hour or so to get knowledgeable about the basics of taking care of small animals, I don't think how much you are paid has anything to do with the fact that when you work somewhere you should know something about what you are selling. It took me maybe two hours on the internet and I know more about gerbils and hamsters than any employee I've ever talked to.
