Halal is a Muslim term for meat from an animal that is deemed to have been slaughtered in accordance with their food processing laws. It also means that it comes from an animal that is considered to be "clean", i.e. not from a pig, dog, or other unclean animal. It is similar to the Jewish term Kosher. However, what qualifies meat as being Halal for a Muslim differs from what makes it Kosher for a Jew. This does not imply in any way that the animal has been humanely slaughtered. In regards to slaughter, all it means is that the name of God was mentioned during the slaughter, and the animals throat was slit rather than dying of natural causes or suffocation.
