Subject: Veganism and leather

One of my best friend's sister recently told me that wearing leather
and being vegan are not contradictory. Her justification for this was
that many more cows are being killed for meat-eaters to consume than
their skin is used for clothing, shoes, furniture, etc. Is this
true? Can this be used as a justification? Any opinions are welcome.
