The problem with that statement is that it does not take into account the selfishness of governing bodies. The U.S. (to my understanding) already produces enough excess food to put a significant dent in world hunger. We do send out emergency aid (although not nearly as much as we are capable of) and often times the targeted countries government refuses to distribute the goods. This happened in Somalia in the 1990's and as a result hundreds of thousands died of starvation. It has also happened in the middle east. Even if emergency food aid is approved by the governing body, the distribution is often insufficient.
