Traditionally, gum base is made from pure plant derivatives. Today, due to environmental depletion of these plant products, gum base is often from man-made synthetics. It's not the gum base that can be problemtatic, but additives and softeners (such as nonvegean stearates or lanolin) that can render a gum nonvegan. Most gum manufacturing is proprietary on a certain level, and manufacturers may be reluctant to reveal all their secrets.
