I can so relate. You sound really frustrated and I know situations can get that way. Just the other night I complimented my boyfriend's 12 year old daughter (she wants go vegetarian when she's 13, by the way) on her 'Egyptian Rice' by saying, "It's really delicious - and it's vegan!". Immediately everyone pounced on me "You're vegan? But that's not good. You need vitamins. What's the difference? The cows like being milked..." and on. My boyfriend looked shocked. "You didn't tell me you were going to go vegan." I tried to move into a lower profile as soon as the discussion animated, but no one would let me go. They were determined to cast me in the role of fanatic. I told them that just basically I don't want to eat dairy or meat. I won't cook it or serve it. "But" as a nod to my loving boyfriend, "whatever you make for me I'll eat." (He's a great cook and puts his heart and soul into it.) I figure that I'm not going to be able to avoid eating dairy, at least, at times in my busy life and travel. Plus, like you, I think some social situations are better handled and enjoyed if you're willing to relax the standards a little. It doesn't mean you have to start chowing down whatever is front of you. It just means being flexible (as long as it's not a threat to your health in terms of possible allergy, for example). So far (this has only been a week) I haven't had much of an opportunity to test this this theory of mine. The truth is that I find the idea now of doing any dairy products rather gross unless whatever it is - cheese, eggs, cream - are buried in baked goods. I honestly don't know how I'd feel with chunks of chicken flesh in front of me, albeit covered in tasty curry sauce.
I hope things will go better for you. I think you're on the right track.
