In the end, I would choose to save a human life over a nonhuman life if placed in such a situation. Nor do I think this is merely the result of some flawed partiality. In the same way, I would also choose a cow's life, for example, over a tick's. I believe that all life is valuable and should be protected, but that does not mean I believe animals are equal to humans. Of course, if you believe they are completely equal, the word is legitimate. That doesn't mean I don't believe animal issues are serious, it just means I may not see an issue where others would.
