You could refer to yourself as a "vegetarian" and save everyone (yourself included) a lot of trouble. No explanations or self-flagellation necessary, whether you're by yourself or with friends/family. Too often it seems people need the "vegan" to cause a stir or out of some weird vanity. How many online forums have there been where someone is dying because they ate some honey or something and they desperately worry about still being able to call themselves vegan. And then hot debate ensues. So sad. You eat what you eat for you, and for your beliefs-- there is no need for all of this self-congratulation and/or boasting (not to say you are doing this). The truth of the matter is, "vegan" popularly refers to something or someone who does not contain/consume any animal products. If you are consuming/buying animal products, you are not a "vegan". If you must, "veganish". At the very least, it's fun to watch the look on people's faces when you say "veganish".
