I think it does far more harm to the vegan lifestyle to call yourself a vegan and then eat something with eggs, dairy or chicken broth in it at someone's house. It sounds to me more like you are missing certain foods or feeling rather lacksidasical in your beliefs and you are looking to justify the decisions that you make or plan to make. it's no big deal if you arent ready for veganism. but just admit it to yourself and move on. Veganism is not simply diet restriction (and if you do it right, its not really a restriction, most vegans i know eat from a far more diverse menu than the typical american diet) but it is a refusal to take part in the torture and killing of animals. i dont see a middle ground there. ie 'its ok to eat this chicken broth stuffing because i dont want to seem like a pain in the butt' and most people are more than happy to show that they can prepare delicious vegan food for a veg guest. i have never felt like an imposition on anyone, nor do i feel any more apologetic than say, a hindu, diabetic or orthodox jew would regarding their dietary needs.
