I find myself thinking the same things quite often (I too have a tendency to overthink and make myself crazy!). I don't make "vegan" into a big identity thing and don't really like using that word to describe how I eat because people have so many preconceived notions that if you're a vegan you're a crazy militant wierdo who won't ride in a car with leather seats or something. I definitely follow a vegan diet absolutely in my house, but I hate being all nitpicky when eating out, especially while traveling. On my recent vacation to Miami, I was happy to find an Ethiopian restaurant that had a large vegetarian menu, and I really just had to turn a blind eye to the possibility that it may have been cooked in butter or have milk in it. I didn't even ask, because I wanted to eat a nice meal for dinner and not a chunk of iceberg lettuce. If I don't eat enough, I get severely cranky so it's just not worth it to me to try and be a vegan perfectionist while traveling. And that's why I hesitate to use the label "vegan" because I guess a "good" vegan would ask those kinds of questions, and I'm sure there are people out there who would make judgements about people who call themselves vegans but don't scrutinize ingredients when they are out. But I'm not perfect, the world isn't perfect, and I do the best I can so that's where I leave it, being vegan but not making a big deal of labeling myself as such.
