Dear Katie,

What a great letter about your angst regarding the veggie label! So eloquently written! I certainly understand where you are coming from, even though I have only been a "near vegan" for about 10 months.

Like other posts, my suggestion is to go easy on yourself. If there are times where it is difficult for me to avoid cheese in a social situation, or to avoid chicken broth in a restaurant, then I tell myself, "if everyone ate like me and had a diet almost devoid of animal products, then the factory farm industry would still be in ruins." If I tried to be a perfect vegan, I might, like someone on too strict a diet, fall off the wagon like your ex has done.

I'm the only "near vegan" I know. It is not something that is well accepted in my workplace where I have my lunch. So, I certainly don't broadcast it. The odd time that food is brought in, there is almost always enough assortment that I don't have to skip out or eat meat or tell everyone that I'm a "near vegan." Why give myself the hassle? In the beginning, I mentioned it, so most people know anyway, but I don't feel the need to remind them. And I tell you, my health and vitality and optimism that I have been blessed with since becoming a vegan is reason enough for them to have respect for us non-meat eaters.

Be proud of all you have accomplished so far,
