Even if you are an athiest, there is still a hierarchy among living things. Some creatures are smarter than others, some are stronger, some are faster. I would not compare the life of a bacterium or an amoeba or a cockroach with the life of a higher being like a fish or a reptile or a bird or a mammal. That's just a fact. There are superior life-forms. Likewise, I would not consider the life of a fish or a reptile equal to a human life. By natural selection and survival of the fittest, we have the right and ability to dominate every species on the planet. That is, unless there's a higher being than us to tell us that's wrong. ;)
My above comments were to illustrate a point. I do not believe that we have the right to treat animals cruely or kill them for pleasure and whatnot. I believe we are stewards of the planet and it's our responsibility to preserve the planet and all species on it. This is our responsibility not because animals are our equal, but because we're the dominant species. And as the most intelligent species, it's our responsibility to protect and preserve earth, not only for ourselves, but for the other creatures on it.
