What age of students do you teach? I teach high school students in rural Alabama where hunting is a really big part of their lives. When they find out I'm vegetarian (which I don't advertise), mainly they are just very curious. Some try to defend why they eat meat, but I tell them I feel about cows and pigs the same way I feel about cats and dogs -- I love them and could never eat them. When I teach "A Modest Proposal" to my British lit. students, they get grossed out at the thought of people eating babies and I tell them I feel the same way about eating animals. It makes them think at least, but I haven't changed anyone's minds so far that I know of. Vegetarianism is just something they have to come to understand on their own. I think it's great you are discussing it with them though.
