Subject: Should I have my flu shot?
Date: October 29, 2005 at 9:38 am PST
I just became a vegan this year, and I am unsure whether or not I should continue having my annual flu shot. On the one hand, I read about the egg industry in The Vegan Sourcebook, as well as a newspaper article describing how the vaccine is made, and it saddened and disgusted me. On the other hand, I live with my parents, who are both in high risk categories(both are elderly, Mom has a heart condition, Dad has asthma), and they're really pressuring me to have the shot "for their sake." I also voulunteer part time in a senior's carefacility, and they just sent m e a "strongly worded letter", regarding the shot, and the consequenses of not having it. As well, everybody's worried about the upcoming flu pandemic, which has been the topic of several recent news reports. With these considerations in mind, should I have the shot, or shouldn't I? My mom has insisted that I call my doctor on Monday to make an appointment for the shot, so I really need a quick answer on this.
