When I was first transitioning, and not as strict as I try to be now, I would tell people that I followed a near vegan diet. If they questioned that or were confrontational, I would just explain that I strive to lead as compassionate a life as possible but I'm not perfect. That would usually stop any further comments and I think it maintains the integrity of veganism.
