In Reply to: Planning a Hawaiian Vacation--any Oahu recommendations? posted by Amy G on January 23, 2006 at 2:24 pm:

i spent ten days on oahu last june and didn't get to see everything you are planning to see. this is a pic of me getting ready to go surfing at ali'i park in haleiwa.

where are you staying?

personally, i really love the north shore and would recommend spending more time, except that it will be a very different scene there now compared to when i went because it's surfing season on the north shore. so i really don't know what it's like up there this time of year, except i would DEFINITELY bring a pair of binoculars and plan to spend some time watching the surfers. one of my big goals in life is to get back to hawaii in the winter so i can see the big waves.

i was not a fan of the polynesian cultural center, but to each her own. it's very disneylandesque. plus, it's really expensive for what it is.

my favorite memories from oahu were:

>>swimming at lanikai beach

>>just driving around the island especially along the kamahameha highway from kaneohe to the north shore. if it rains, look up at the pali (cliffs) and look for waterfalls!

>>valley of the temples outside of kaneohe (there's a replica of a buddhist temple there)

>>surfing lessons (there should be places with small waves for beginners somewhere on the island)

>>visiting a couple of different botanical gardens. we didn't visit foster, but there are a bunch of other botanical gardens throughout the island that are part of the same system. we went to one near the valley of the temples that was amazing and another that was near millilani.

>>"li hing" margarita at cholos restaurant in haleiwa

>>hiking the hauula loop trail

places i wanted to visit but didn't get a chance - the bishop museum, chinatown, the waimea valley audubon center, some of the historic hotels on waikiki.

in terms of food, finding vegan food is easy anywhere in haleiwa. in waikiki it's a little more difficult because it's so touristy. if you go to valley of the temples, nearby there is an adventist hospital with a vegetarian cafeteria that anyone can eat in. i don't remember the name of it, but i heard about it through various websites on vegetarian food on oahu. also, there is a local fast food chain that sells veggie burgers for a quick bite while near kaneohe. i can't remember the name of that chain either, but again i heard of it through the various vegetarian websites. oops, i just did a quick search and i think the fast food chain is Mr. Goodburger and the place at the hospital is called Pali Gardens.

is well bento the place that's across the street from the big health food store in honolulu? that place is yummy, it's just a take out place but there's a park across the street where you can sit and eat. then you can go into the health food store and get yummy vegan cookies and other vegan baked goods.

if you tell me where you are staying i can give you more info.
