In addition to what Jo said, miso contains all essential amino acids and it's a complete protein. It's a great source of vitamin B12. It reduces LDL cholesterol. It's high in anti-oxidants and will help protect your body from free radicals.

When cooking with miso, just use enough to provide flavor. Too much miso will as you have noted, create a salty dish.
