I've noticed that the production cost for a made from scratch vegan burger of TVP, gluten, and other ingredients seems to be about 10 cents cheaper than using an equivalent amount of 80/20 ground beef.

On the other hand, the money I'm saving from NOT eating a weekly grilled t-bone steak seems to be offset by the increased food costs for fresh fruit and vegetables.

The question of vegan food costs reminds me of a documentary on MSNBC that I watched a few weeks ago. I don't remember the title of the program but the film highlighted one working class family which frequently ate fast food from McDonald's dollar menu. The mother explained that she and her husband were both holding down two jobs and that it was more convenient and cost effective for the family to buy fast food than to buy fresh fruit and vegetables.

Isn't it sad that junk food is cheaper than wholesome food with low fat and no cholesterol?
