Subject: dealing with insects while living in a rural area
Date: April 23, 2012 at 7:41 pm PST

So I moved into my first house less than a year ago. It is in southern NJ. There are alot of woods in this area and my house in on an acre of land that is mostly wooded, but not densely - you can see through it and the brush is light. It is only April and I am already getting eaten up by insects. I got somewhat used to insects when I moved to South Jersey about 6 years ago - I always wear long denim pants when I go outside as well as a long sleeved denim shirt, even in 90 degree weather (rather than spraying myself with chemicals), or sweat pants/shirt if it is cool enough. When I am going out out - like shopping or whereever, I am not so concerned about wearing insect-proof clothing, but I don't think I will ever wear shorts again or tank tops because they just find me and bite me!

Now, it is only April and both my ankles and up to my knees have bites all over them (I usually wear a long nightshirt, so that is probably why they are knee level or below). I am finding it hard to keep these biting insects (I think they are some form of super bug} from getting into my house when I open the door. My front door opens right into my living room. The door is white (would another color be better?) and when I open the door, I never know if there are any insects already hanging out on the door (which they usually are). Then when I open the door that swings into the house, the bugs that are on the door easily fly off.

In the few warm days we have gotten so far, there have been many times when I have opened the door and know bugs have gotten in. I always try to catch and release and have only killed ticks and mosquitos so far because they can cause me much pain (and possibly much worse) if they bite me. I have another door going out the back that is a sliding door with a sliding screen with it. Even with the sliding screen it is tricky to keep all insects out because if I don't always use the screen they can easily get between the window door and screen door. It is getting to the point where I don't feel comfortable in my own home. Now I feel like I need to wear long pants even when I am inside. It's so frustrating. I am getting a retractable screen for the front door and am hoping that will help because the front door is the biggest problem. But actually the biggest problem is not being able to find these bugs once they get in either because they are too small or hide. If it is dark outside and I open the door I make sure to close the lights inside before I open the door. My parents suggest spraying around my house with insecticide, but I am not sure - I would really like some opinions. I wanted to stay away from all insecticides because they kill the good insects as well as the bad and it can throw off the ecosystem. Does anyone have any suggestions? What really scares me is that it is ONLY APRIL - I hate to imagine what it is going to be like when it is June, July and August! I am afraid!

Peace~
Silvia
