As Jo said, there's no substitute for reading labels.

Most commercial bread from big bakeries contains milk. There is no reason for it - you can make perfectly good bread without it - but it's usually there.

Same thing with margarine. Go figure! Why on Earth would they put butter in margarine? But they do. So you have to check the labels every time.

Even when you find a good product that is vegan and that you buy regularly, it pays to check the label from time to time. Ingredients change, and they don't always advertise the fact. One of our favourite vegan chocolates suddely became non-vegan one day, with no warning. If we didn't frequently check labels, we wouldn't have noticed.
