You can use agar powder, but the results will not be as good. Yes, agar flakes are expensive, but most high-quality ingredients are. There's not much way to get around that, unfortunately. However, there are many, many, many other uncheese recipes in my book that do not call for agar flakes, so perhaps you could try those instead.
