I live in a community that most people would call economically depressed. Most residents actually like it that way, but we also have to ensure that it doesn't get so depressed that we lose our local businesses altogether.

If we didn't buy nails from the local hardware store at 40% more than they cost in town, the store would go out of business and we'd have to go into town, a $20 ferry ride even though the nails are cheaper, to buy them.

There is a premium to be paid for the privilege of not letting Monsanto and Walmart govern our consumption patterns. By paying more to buy local, we ensure that our community consists of farmers, retailers, painters, potters and booksellers, rather than just consumers.
