One of my other neighbors has a cat that is indoor/outdoor. My neighbor knows what an animal lover I am and would tell me that the cat would bring home all kinds of animals; birds, snakes, chipmunks, even a rabbit - all alive. I didn't believe that the cat was not killing the animals but now that you say you have a cat that catches them and doesn't kill them, then maybe he was telling the truth. I thought that all cats who hunt, hunt to kill/eat, but I am guessing that even if they don't mean to harm the animal the animal still might die because of the trauma and/or bites. I once saw that same cat with a cardinal in its mouth and I thought it was dead, but maybe, like you mentioned, it could have just been stunned.
