When I was growing up my family more or less came to the same conclusion you did. After our family cat was hit by a car we started walking our cats on leashes. But cats, though they can be trained to walk down the street, really want to be able to act like cats, which is pretty darn boring to walk. So my dad built an enclosure out of wood and chicken wire -- it had a little gate to get in and out, and places for the cats to climb and lay down inside. The cats really enjoyed it. Yours sounds very modern and high tech. =)
