Subject: Little grain bugs ...

Hello! I'm wondering if others have encountered little black bugs in their whole grains. If so, what do you do about it? Is this unsafe? Is there a way to prevent infestation without killing them?

I was digging into my brown rice for a second time, and I noticed the little wigglers. I didn't clean my rice the first time I used it, which means I ate some (honestly, this grosses me out more than it makes me feel guilty). The bag came in a re-sealable pouch, so I'm thinking the bugs were there when I got the rice. This seems like a natural occurance.

The second time around I picked them out and set them free outside, though I'm wondering if there is a way to avoid bug picking every time I eat grains. Also, I live in MN, so I'd hate to throw them outside in 20 below weather.

Ideas would be really appreciated!
