I'm not sure what to tell you, Erin, if this a requirement for your required class. Perhaps asking the appropriate questions to the farm owner might help. Even if the goats are treated royally on the dairy farm, they will still ultimately be shipped off and slaughtered for meat when their production wanes. Ask the farmers if they name the goats (often, if it is a small, family-type operation, they do). If they do, ask whether knowing that the goats they so lovingly care for will be killed bothers them. Do they look into the goats' eyes when they are loaded onto the truck for slaughter? Do they sense the goats' feelings of betrayal? How do they live with themselves (or sleep at night) knowing that they have sent these beautiful animals, filled with personality and life, off to be killed?

Think of good questions to ask. Ask them in front of your teacher and classmates. Don't let the farmers avoid answering them. Make the trip worth everyone's while.

Let us know what happens. Good luck!
