Nancy, I think people didn't respond because it really is up to each individual to try to work out how to live a compassionate life without it becoming an obsession. Just being alive entails killing microscopic life forms, such as bacteria. We breathe in microscopic entities and they live on our skin, hair, nasal passages, and other body parts. Just walking, whether on pavement or grass, results in stepping on minuscule life forms. Being vegan is about doing the best you can by avoiding exploitation and not contributing to suffering. But it is not, and never has been, about achieving some random and impossible level of perfection. By aiming for that you are only going to drive yourself nuts and create internal suffering -- which is not at all the purpose of being vegan. Lighten up. Enjoy life. Contribute in positive ways. You may only have this one time around, so make the most of it by making the world a better place by spreading joy and happiness. You cannot do that if you surround yourself with a wall of fear and guilt.
