Since the reason you gave for considering the veg lifestyle is compassion, I recommend you take some time to learn about the brutality involved in using animals for food. There are many videos which show the disturbing details behind factory farming. See if there is any kind of animal rescue in your area and visit them. With the images of the factory killing floor juxtaposed with the kindness shown by compassionate animal caretakers, it might give you strength to get through the transition to veg. There are also health, ecological, and economical reasons to consider that diet choice. Learn about those, too, for strength in your resolve. Take it slowly if you need to.

I was in the same boat when I made the switch. It was just before the Net became big and I was sure I was the only vegan in Utah. Over time I got to meet other like-minded people and it made the journey a little lighter. I'm still (probably) one of the few vegans in the county I currently live in, but I know that this board is a great place to turn to for questions or advise.
